If you don't own a car, you may be able to afford an expensive bike which you use for transportation. I'm inclined to use a basic mountain bike frame, and customize it with a rack or two (one in the front also), an internal rear hub, and a hub generator in the front. The gears in the rear hub tend to be trouble-free, and the generator hub in the front gives you light without batteries.
Having a small trailer can be very useful also. Often one can find a used trailer once used to carry children, and it can be used to carry children or cargo ... the groceries, etc.
