I'm glad you picked up on this. I actually lived for a little while in the exactly canyon where this happened, up Miller creek. Never came across any bears, but there is plenty of wildlife there.
Unfortutanatly (for the bears at least) this part of the suburbs of Missoula is growing by leaps and bounds.
Little doubt, the dude is completely just.
